STATEN ISLAND, NY — Area man Anthony Calabrese, 31, was unable to meet friends for drinks this past week, due to a misguided attempt to feel young again. Calabrese, bass player and back-up vocals, for his band, Ship in A Bottle, meets bi-weekly with his 3 band mates — also sad, nearly-middle-aged men — for practice, in hopes of one day performing for anyone, or anything, willing to watch. “I think we’re really coming together — it’s just a matter of time before we get booked, and then they’ll all see.” says Calabrese.
Jenny Yu, Calabrese’s girlfriend, has more: “Am I angry? yeah I’m angry! I’ve been planning this get-together for weeks — I told him how important this was to me — but he seems to think his ‘art’ is more important. No one wants to hear a reggae, ska, punk, metal band — it’s not breaking the mold; its just stupid. Ugh!”
At press time the only comment Calabrese’s mother could offer was a sad, barren stare, despoiled of any hope that her son might one day give her grandchildren.
